It's a good idea to take classes at the hospital you are giving birth in, because many natural childbirth education classes include a tour of the hospital's maternity ward. This gives you an introduction to the labor, delivery and recovery rooms, and the nursery. You'll also be able to meet with the certified nursing staff. Online, you can check out childbirth programs, life tools, pregnancy advice, trimester stages, parenting advice, message boards, books and journals, parenting tips, natural birthing tips, instruction classes, free DVD or video samples, association information, outreach programs, preparation tips, childbirth education license information, postpartum and prenatal advice, expert advice, maternal supplies, and advice on how life changes after the baby is born. Before choosing a childbirth education class or specialist, research the certified teacher carefully, noting how long she has been a childbirth education professional, any affiliations, contact information, and degrees. Childbirth education teachers must be held to the same sets of standards as other teaching professionals. Meet with the professional or specialist beforehand if you can to get an outline of the course and find out exactly what topics will be covered, such as breastfeeding, breathing techniques, labor and delivery support and advice, hospital tours, childbirth training, instruction courses, and delivery assistance. Find out the cost of the program and ask about any other parenting resources available to you in the community.
